We tried baking a German Chocolate Pound Cake and it went horribly wrong

This was a baking fail, but you'll still want to try it for yourself!

My dad’s birthday is the day after Christmas, and every year he would request his favorite cake: German Chocolate. Typical German Chocolate cake is made with nuts, and since me and my brother are allergic to nuts we could never have a piece of my dad’s cake (great for him, sad for us!)

So almost 20 years ago my family started making a German Chocolate Pound Cake…without nuts! We love it! We make this cake multiple times a year, and always bake a couple dozen during the holidays and wrap them up as gifts for friends, family and neighbors. They’re always a huge hit!

So, I decided to share the cake recipe with all of you, and in the YEARS I’ve been making this it’s NEVER gone wrong…until I filmed it. (watch the Facebook post below to see what I mean)

So, despite my utter baking fail, here’s how you can make your own German Chocolate Pound Cake:

What you need:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 small box of vanilla pudding
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 bar of German Chocolate (we use Bakers)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • Bundt pan
  • Cooking Spray (PREFERABLY WITH FLOUR)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Vanilla Ice Cream (optional)

What to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°
  2. Grate German Chocolate Bar
  3. In a large bowl combine cake mix, pudding, oil, water and beaten eggs and mix until there are no clumps
  4. Gently mix in German Chocolate and Chocolate Chips
  5. Pour into a GREASED AND FLOURED PAN
  6. Bake for 50 minutes
  7. Cool for 10 minutes before flipping
  8. Sprinkle top with powdered sugar and serve with some vanilla ice cream (optional, but definitely recommended)
