In Partnership with the Southern Weekend

The Story Behind Schmidt Bakery’s Insanely Popular “Thing-a-Lings”

They're sweet, they look like chicken wings and pretty much everyone loves them.

Every Presidents’ Day weekend, thousands flood the town of Batesville, Indiana for one thing.

The Cherry “Thing-A-Ling.”

This crazy-delicious, chicken wing looking fritter has been a fan favorite of Schmidt Bakery since the 70s and they’re only available one weekend a year. We stopped by to see what the hype was all about and hear the story for ourselves.

Wanna get some for yourselves? Call 812-934-4501 to place an order, or just stop by the store from Thursday – Monday. After that, they’ll be gone for another year.

Hours to buy thing-a-lings:

  • Thursday, Feb. 14: 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.
