One of Cincy's favorite breweries is branching out.
Joining a growing field, MadTree Brewing is plucking a bounty from a local orchard to offer hard cider at their taproom in Oakley.
The Cincinati-based brewers teamed up with the Beiersdorfer Orchard in southeast Indiana to bring the new cider to market.
It’s the first time the 5-year-old brewery has offered a cider. The brewers said they wanted to expand their portfolio and offer a new drink to patrons with gluten sensitivity or who wanted an alternative to beer.
42 Mile Journey
MadTree calls the cider “42 Mile,” an homage to the orchard since Beiersdorfer is about 42 miles east of the brewery.
42 Mile is described as a semi-sweet cider with a “balance of sweetness and dryness…. [to] create a crisp apple finish.”
MadTree was quick to add that the cider meets FDA guidelines to be declared gluten-free, as well.
“When we set out to make a hard cider, it was really important for us to know where the fruit came from and who the farmer was that grew it,” Ryan Blevins, MadTree head brewer, said in a release.
Beiersdorfer Orchard manager Jeremy Beiersdorfer said his team was proud to work with the brewers and that they appreciated MadTree’s “desire to support local family farms.”
The new cider goes on tap Friday at the MadTree Taproom at 3301 Madison Rd. in Oakley.
The brewery does not plan to distribute the cider yet and cautions patrons that state law does not permit growler sales of cider yet.
